Hi Everyone!

Today I am sharing with you one of the ways I have chose to incorporate Montessori into our home. There are so many different ways incorporate Montessori and today I wanted to share with you how we have Lila’s Closet set up. I will soon be sharing more ways we incorporate Montessori at home and you will be able to find all the posts under the category Montessori as this series grows.

Now on to Lila’s Closet

There is so much that I like about having her closet set up this way. Everything is accessible to her and she can easily pick out whatever it is she is looking for. The length of her clothing rod is way smaller than the length of a closet rod, so there is less to put on it and less pick from. This is actually makes it easier when creating an outfit, especially for a toddler. I can say, “Okay Lila, go pick your outfit.” and when she comes back with a pink shirt, a pink dress, and pink shoes it almost always works out because all of the options I have out for her are in the same color block.

If you reading this and just thought, what the heck is a color block? Don’t worry. It might actually not even be technically called that, that’s just what I call it but I promise I didn’t make it up. A few months ago I was reading an article that was titled “how to pack for vacation with less” or something like that. Just go with it. And basically this girl packed for a week long trip and only packed like 7 different demin colored pieces of clothing. It pretty much blew my mind and I instantly wanted that in my life. Especially for Lila! She has soooooo many different colors of clothes that it is actually overwhelming to open up my closet (we used to share a closet) and see all of them. So a few months ago when I made her clothing rack her actual closet, I only put clothes that were pink or blush or white or light gray. It really has made getting dressed so simple! So, that’s why I call it a color block even though if you google that term you’ll never find the article I’m talking about. If you do know the appropriate term for what I’m talking about would you leave it in the comments below? Thanks!

Both Lila and I love her closet. It is super child friendly, promotes independence, and adds a bit of sparkle to the room seeing all her pretty clothes.

What Makes It Montessori?

  • Transparent organizational system
  • Eye level options
  • She is able to pick out and put away her own clothes
  • Only have clothing available that is okay for the child the choose
  • Limiting quantities so making a choice isn’t overwhelming
  • An attractive, visually appealing area

In my opinion her closet is actually way too cluttered, but hey- my little lady needs her 12 pairs of shoes okay? Haha. This actually is not even a quarter of the clothes in the wardrobe- the rest of it is in my closet and I’ll only pull it out if I want her to wear something specific. I also have all of her off season clothes/shoes in there and will switch them out for things on her rack when it starts getting a little bit colder. Then there are just some things that just simply do not match her color block, (sorry yellow sandals, we still love you!) which is fine, but part of the Montessori teaching is to only have clothing available that is okay for the child to chose. I also think it would be discouraging to her if she put the effort into picking out an outfit and then I went and just switched it for something else because I didn’t want her wearing yellow sandals, with striped shirt, and a floral pants. Okay so maybe that doesn’t sound that bad- but our system works great for our home even though I might be a smidge controlling over her choices. Haha.

Actually getting the clothes on…

Lila is only two and half and for the most part still needs help getting dressed. As she gets older she will be less dependent on me to do the dressing so for now I always encourage her to try her best anyways. She is really good at putting on skirts, decent at getting on certain dresses, and excellent at taking off bottoms.

What Makes It Montessori?

When the child is learning to dress herself, help as little as possible, but enough to keep them from becoming frustrated.

Tips & Tricks

  • Lay clothing out on floor in the order they will put it on
  • Have a stool or a pillow to sit on
  • Show the child that they need to be able to to look down and see the tag or the writing on the underwear or the pants. If the clothing does end up backwards it’s fine as long as it isn’t bothering the child.
  • You can put the socks up and over toes, and let the child then pull them over the heel and up.

And, most importantly, give the child space and time. When you know that the child can do it, let them — even if you have to sit on your hands to keep from helping.

Laundry…

Our laundry basket for Lila’s clothes is at the right height for her eye level and she loves putting her clothes it it when she is done wearing them. She’ll always say, “Okay skirt it’s time to go in the basket!” and then she dunks it in. It’s like a total game to her or something, she loves it.

When her laundry basket reaches the top we go to the washer together and since she can’t reach the top I just have her hand me her clothes from the basket and I put them in myself. A lot of them end up on the floor and it takes forever, but she really feels like she is doing her laundry and I think that’s great. When the washer is done I’ll take her things out and hand them to her to put in the dryer. Again- a lot of them end up on the floor and it takes forever, but she really feels like she is doing her laundry and I think that’s great.

When the dryer is done it gets pretty hot so for safety I will put her clothes back in her basket. Then we will sit down together in front of her clothing rack and she helps put her clothes on their hanger and then onto her rack. She still needs help with a lot of clothes, but the ones that she can do she will do.

I really love having her closet set up this way and having complete control over what she can wear, without discouraging a choice she wants to make. Let me know in the comments if you have your toddler’s closet set up this way or if you like the idea of it. Thanks for reading.

Warmly,

Celeste Wright

Lila’s Look Is c/o Cotton On Kids  — Dress // Jacket // Shoes // Bag

Hi Everyone!

If you are a mama bear then chances are high that your kiddo is in school today! What a roller coaster of emotions. My little lady isn’t even in school yet and I get emotional every time I hear her say, “Hi my name is Lila and I’m going back to school!” She is just copying her older cousin who is starting 1st grade today, ahhhh! We spent the past few weeks helping her cousin get to ready for today and Lila loves the idea of going to back to school mainly because it sounds fun. She really does love her cousin’s school though. When we visit she has so much fun and does not want to leave. Maybe it’ll be different when she realizes mommies don’t stay at school with the kids. I’m pretty sure that will ruin it for her and she’ll want to wait like 5 more years to leave me. Maybe not though. Haha.

Really though half the fun of going back to school is the back to school shopping! So me and my sister took the girls to one of their favorite places, Cotton On Kids. My local mall has a mega location and it is seriously the girls’ favorite store. They want to go in there and play/go shopping every single time we go the mall. It’s pretty dang cute! Annnd it was so much fun taking them and loading them up from the shopping spree that we might just have to make this a yearly tradition.

Stay strong this week mamas, sending love!

Lila’s: SHIRT // SHOES // BACKPACK

Hi Everyone!

In my last post I mentioned that Lila has been obsessed with carrying around a backpack and well… that hasn’t changed. Haha. Last night Hubs and I went out for anniversary and left Lila with my parents. My mom is so generous and is always shopping for her grandkids. She loves to spoil them with a bag of clothes/toys every time she sees them. It is super sweet and makes those first moments with my parents even more special since they get to open a present. This gem of a skirt was in her bag last night and I couldn’t stop smiling when I saw all the kitty cats. Lila thinks it’s the best thing ever so she might never take it off.

Hubs and I had a great time on our date and I woke up feeling refreshed and recharged. We had a great morning together and she kept mentioning all the chocolates my mom let her eat last night. I giggle every time she tells me about it. Also, if you are looking for a back to school backpack this leopard one is a seriously great choice. It is just so perfect for a little toddler and can hold so much. I linked it under the last photo if you want to check it out. I hope everyone has a great afternoon!

Sunday Funday

Lila’s Outfit: DRESS // SHOES // BACKPACK

Hi Everyone!

I hope you all had a good weekend. I love the weekend because it means Hubs is home and we usually use of those days to wander around town. Yesterday we ended up in South Pasadena where they host their weekly farmer’s market. We got there pretty early so we had the place to ourselves. We got pastries at a local bakery, walked around a bit, and waited/cheered when a train came by. Lila always runs straight to these rocks whenever she sees them so we let her play with them for a bit. She is getting pretty good at throwing them and Hubs loves making it their little activity.

We brought along our alphabet Chatbook which has 26 photos from my Instagram page and 26 letters. It’s a fun way to read the alphabet but also look back on a memory. One of our favorite artists, Dallas Clayton, designed it making it even more special. We let Lila keep it in her backpack which she has been obsessed with carrying around lately. I’ll link below the book template so you can check it out. It is one of the most special books in Lila’s library right now. And really who can say no to a book?

Today me and Lila are doing a craft so check back in a few days and I’ll share how it turned out. Until next time…<3

Romper // Shoes // Sunglasses

Hi Everyone + Happy Friday!

We spent the day with my family and that means getting spoiled with treats. I am obsessed with all things blush for Lila and when I found this adorable romper from Childhoods Clothing I had to get it. It is so perfect for summer and so easy to take on and off. We are still doing diapers for Lila and I always try to find clothes that are easy to take and off while on the go.

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Treat yourself to something cold & delicious, Lila says.

Let Yourself Rest

Hi Everyone!

I have been cooking a lot lately and trying new recipes. I have never known my way around the kitchen so it is all new to me. I have been doing good at the few things I have tried and been encouraged by the process. Today was one of the (first of many I’m sure) days where I messed up making lunch. I wasn’t following a recipe though, I was just sort of winging it, so maybe that was my first mistake. Haha.

So I packed up the stroller, got Lila dressed in a romper, and we went to our usual spot. We had a picnic in the grass area with snacks and Lila’s mermaid toys (she brings them everywhere) in her Itty Bitty Be Diaper Bag . It was so nice to be in a shady spot just relaxing. It is one of my favorite things to just pick a spot and through a blanket down and park it there for a while. Lila played at the playground and we couldn’t leave without spotting my the kid’s shoe section of Nordstrom for her usual pink balloon. The employees know her by name and will run into the back right when they see her. I guess that gives you a clue about how often we do this.

We are back home now and so excited to welcome home Hubs. He is bringing home to dinner tonight to cheer me up about my lunch time fail. He’s a good one you guys. 🙂

I hope everyone is having a great day!

Hey There Little Mama

Triokid Deluxe Baby Doll Stroller // Lila’s Shoes

Good Morning Friends!

On our coffee run this morning Lila insisted on bringing her new -adorable- baby doll stroller. We normally wouldn’t let her bring something this big on a walk, but she looks so dang cute pushing it that I caved. You can’t tell from the photos (because she sinks to the bottom) but she puts her little baby Anna from Frozen in it. The whole walk she would say “How ya doin’ Anna? You okay?” It was seriously cute.

Jake and I sipped our cold brew and let her push it around for a bit. We parked the car nearby so we thought it was perfect to let her get some energy out before we packed her back in the carseat. She means serious business with that stroller. And I seriously -can’t even- with how much I love seeing her push it.

I’d be lying if I said seeing her with this little stroller hasn’t given me a feeling or two of wanting a newborn around. Then I remember that when she was that little she wouldn’t sit in the stroller for more than a few minutes without crying for me to hold her. -And the feeling fades.- Haha. Maybe if we get her a baby carrier to practice being a big sister because then it would be way more accurate.

Seriously though, if you are pregnant and need a little help teaching your babe the responsibilities of being a big sister this stroller is perfect for that. OR if your little mama loves babies and needs an excuse to look super cute walking around town, this works great for that too. 😉

I hope everyone is having a fantastic Saturday!

Toddler Fashion Favorites with Wilshire + Cooper

Dress // Shoes // Tote

Hi Everyone!

Today I am sharing with you my new favorite online store to shop for Lila. I love shopping online for her because if I find something I think like, I can very quickly see how others are styling it on Instagram and that helps a lot when everything toddler sized is so stinking cute and I can’t decide. I ordered her a few pieces from one of my favorite brands and in these photos she is wearing the dress. I ordered it size 18-24 months even though she is in 2T and as you can tell from the photos it fits her great even though it’s one size small. The dress is naturally suppose to be a bit flowy, so I love that instead it is fitted. It’s easily my favorite piece in her closet right now.

I got her dress from Wilshire + Cooper.  They are a new online destination for designer kids appeal and accessories, offering unique and designer brands from all over the world. The range is from handmade to runway fashion, so there is something for everyone. With one browse you’ll recognize some of your favorite brands and find brands that you can’t believe you didn’t know existed. I love that all my favorites are now in one place at Wilshire + Cooper. You can get 15% off your entire order with code: OHHELLO15

Check on my Instagram for how I style the rest of the pieces I got her. Have a great week!
