Ways To Promote Toddler Independence

My Dress // My Hat // My Shoes

Lila’s Dress // Lila’s Socks // Lila’s Shoes

Hi Everyone!

It’s no secret that my little lady, Lila, is my BABY. I have defiantly been known to be a helicopter parent because I am pretty much that girl’s shadow. Since she is my first and only kid I have been keen on not missing a moment. I mean, not missing a single moment. She spends nearly one hundred percent of her time with me. I rarely will have my mom watch her for any reason. I can’t explain why I feel so attached to her, I just never want to be without her. Does anybody else feel that way?

Now that Lila is in full on kid mode I wanted to share with you ways that I have been encouraging her independence in different ways around the house. It’s hard for me sometimes to stop myself from just doing everything for her.

In The Kitchen

  • If I am cooking in the kitchen, I give Lila a special title of “Kitchen Helper.” She begs to be called this and will do anything I ask as long as she is referred to by this nickname. Figuring this out was a game changer in getting her excited to help out.
  • While in the kitchen I will ask her help for getting ingredients out the refrigerator. She can reach even the highest shelf in our fridge so unless something is really far back or blocked by a lot of other items, she can grab things with ease.
  • When the ingredients are being chopped or mixed I try to include her as much as possible while still being safe. Her favorite thing to do is pour pre-measured ingredients into bowl or mix with spoon in bowl.
  • When lunch is getting cooked I will hand her items to put items in trash. She really loves putting things in the trash can and my husband will ask her to do this from all over the house.

Mealtime

  • One thing I have never done is fed Lila. You know like put some on a spoon and fly it into their mouth pretending it’s an airplane? Not me. Ever since Lila started eating solid food I put her plate in front of her with a fork/spoon and let her have at it. At first mealtime was pretty messy, but the better her hands got with utensils the less messy it became. Since she has never had help, she doesn’t expect it. She is very independent when it comes to eating and even picking what she is hungry for.
  • I usually will offer two options and let her pick. This makes it easy because she has control over what she is eating while I get to pick what the options are. We do this for snacks and full meals.
  • When mealtime is over Lila will actually ask for a wipe and wipe her own face. It is something she started doing all on her own and I wouldn’t have it any other way. She sometimes needs help with her hands and if she asks I will help her.

Dressing

  • I have shared this before but Lila’s Montessori closet has a clothing rack with all of her available options. The majority of her outfits that she wears inside or outside daily are all created by her. I do monitor which selections go on the rack, but when it comes to picking outfits it is all her. Unless we are taking photos where she needs to be wearing a specific outfit. I really do try to never go against her outfit choices once they have been picked out.
  • Things that she can do by herself while getting dressed/undressed include:
  • pulling her shirt off of her head
  • pushing her arms through sleeves
  • pulling her socks off
  • putting her shoes on
  • pulling her shoes off
  • putting shoes in the shoes basket by our front door

Laundry

  • I have shared this before but Lila’s Montessori closet has a hamper where she puts her own clothes in a dirty bin after they have been worn.
  • When the bin fills up she will help me transfer the clothes from bin to washer, washer to dryer, and dryer to bin.
  • We are having a hard time learning how to fold without turning the clothing into scrunched up piles. We will get there! haha. (Tips welcomed!)

In The Bathroom

  • Washing hands is something that I do need to watch her do because she is up on a high stool. But she does the water and soap all on her own.
  • Letting me know she needs a new diaper. She will always tell me when she needs a new diaper and even go and get one for me to change her. Potty training is around the corner and that’s a whole new ball game.
  • This is simple but I always let her pick which towel to use when she gets out of the bath. She will pick it before hand and we use it when she needs to dry off.

I hope you enjoyed these simple ways I am encouraging independence at home. We are adding to the list everyday it seems that before I know it I’ll have a little citizen on my hands.

Did Someone Say, Date Night?

Let’s Take a Peak Inside The Theater…

Good Morning Friends!

Last night was a very special night because it was *drumroll please* Date Night! Jake and I almost never go out just the two of us. In fact it’s mid July and we have only been out just the 2 of us one other night this year. Needless to say, this date night was long over due.

I have been wanting to see Baby Driver since I saw the preview and finally Jake asked for a date night enough times that he wore me down. We decided to see it at iPic since it’s more than just a theater but rather an experience.

From the moment I walked in I was instantly relaxed. The lighting is rather dim and there is a nice aura about the place. We checked in at the concierge desk and she kindly escorted downstairs to the lounge and theater area. As you can see from the photos above there is an entire lounge area where you can sit, talk, and order food/drinks before or after the movie. I loved this area and it was the perfect place to grab a drink and talk a bit before the movie.

When it was time to be seated for the movie the manager on duty kindly walked us to our seats and gave a tour of the sitting area. Our seats were waiting for us with pillows and a fleece blanket. How awesome  is that? I always wish I had snuck a blanket into the theater before so this was like a dream come true. I was also impressed with the amount of storage available. There was a place for my purse and everything.

We ordered food before the movie started and they brought it out to us in courses during the movie. It seriously couldn’t have been better timed how they brought it out either. First, when the previews were starting an attendant brought each seat their bag of popcorn (the best part!) Then as the movie was starting our drinks were delivered. I got a coke and Jake got an orange cream and they also brought us each a water. It was so nice having a ice cold glass to drink from instead of a paper cup. A few minutes later our appetizer was brought out, warm pretzels with mustard and jalapeño cheese. Yum! Towards the middle of the movie we were brought tater tots and sliders. I was so full off eating my entire popcorn, but these tater tots couldn’t keep me away. I never realized how much I loved tater tots before. The sliders were super yummy too! When the movie was ending is when our dessert was brought out, Smores a la mode! It was so delicious and the perfect thing to end the movie with. Our waitress was also the nicest girl on the planet. I wanted to give her a hug at the end because she was seriously a rock star and made our night unforgettable with her attentiveness to making sure everything was perfect for us.

On our walk back to the car I couldn’t stop smiling. It was by far the best date night we had gone on since having Lila. Also something about walking through the One Colorado alley at night with the twinkling lights gives me the kind of magical feeling you get around Christmas time. We might just have to make date night a more regular thing. Oh and Baby Driver did it not disappoint. If you haven’t seen yet runnnn to theaters. Literally stop what you’re doing and go to the theater. IT’S SO GOOD.

When On Abbot Kinney…

By on June 4, 2017

Stroller // Baby Carrier // Diaper Bag // My Jumpsuit // My Shoes

Hi Everyone!

Yesterday me and my sister rounded up the kiddos to go Casetify store on Abbot Kinney. They were hosting a special event for us where the kids could make artwork and then when they were done crafting we got to pick our favorite masterpieces to turn into phone cases. It was amazing. The kids had so much fun and I loved seeing their eyes light up at the craft station going to town on their projects. I can’t even handle the cuteness they created. If you follow me on Instagram then you saw the behind the scenes on my InstaStories. When I get the case in the mail I will be sure to share it here in my next post.

After the kids were done crafting we decided to take advantage of the awesome parking spot that we scored and walk around Abbot Kinney for a bit. It was such a beautiful day since it was warm and overcast, in my opinion a perfect combination. We stopped by Blue Bottle for iced lattes and Blue Star for donuts and in between found all of these adorable walls. Both kiddos ended up falling asleep on the walk back to the car which was a #MomWin.

A Bit About This Stroller: I love this stroller because not only does it turn heads but also maneuvers like a dream. The bottom basket was jam packed with the kid’s stuff like outfit changes, water bottles, snacks, balloon animals, and who the heck knows what else but it didn’t effect the smoothness of the ride at all. It also folds up into one piece which is super awesome because our old stroller was two pieces and much harder to break down. It also came with all the accessories, instead of them all being sold separately. How annoying is it when you get a stroller and then you have to buy -everything- separate?! I loved that with this Kangaroo stroller everything is right there in the box. Because it’s a single stroller the kids have to trade off between sitting in the stroller / being worn in a carrier. It’s funny to see them fight over who gets to sit in the stroller, it reminds me of calling shotgun to sit the front seat.

I hope everyone had a fun weekend with family and friends!

Our Favorite Snack From Picnics To Parties

By on May 29, 2017

Hi Everyone!

I have still been at home recovering, so one of my favorite things to do with Lila is picnic in the front yard. She loves it because she loves to be outside and I love it because I feel like we are doing something without having to leave home. She gets so excited for our picnics and will choose random things that she wants to bring outside. I always let her fill a basket with fruit from the fridge because what’s the harm in that, right? She will usually eat the apple out of all the fruit she brings out because cantaloupe, mango, and orange all require preparation. My favorite guilt free afternoon snack that makes it to our picnic has to be Harvest Snaps.

If you haven’t tried Harvest Snaps you are seriously missing out. Harvest Snaps are made from real, all-natural peas. They have tons of protein and low fat and sodium. I have been eating them for years and my favorite part is that I have no guilt about snacking on them. Lila and my husband love them almost as much as me, so I always have a snack bag full of them in my diaper bag. They are perfect to take on the go and easy to eat in the car for long drives.

There are also eight different flavors, each better than the last. So you can still switch things up with a new flavor here and there. My favorite flavor is the light salted, because I think they are perfect. I’ll switch things up with tomato basil or mango chile lime. They are also gluten free and dairy free, so that’s a win!

I hope everyone had a great long weekend with family. If you are looking for a delicious, healthy snack for at home or on the go, you can find Harvest Snaps near the produce section almost anywhere. Happy Snacking!

*Thank you to Harvest Snaps for sponsoring this post. All opinions are my own.

My Dress // My Shoes // My Tote // Lila’s Dress // Lila’s Shoes // Lila’s Backpack

Hi Everyone!

After a long week at home recovering surgery it felt so good to get dressed in something other than pajamas and hit the town. The second Jake got home from work we went to our local mall so that Lila could run around freely and I could get some fresh air. I wore my new dress from Olive Ave and it instantly became my new favorite. I seriously want my closet to have 20 of these dresses in different colors and patterns. It is comfortable and perfect for adventures.

Thank you to everyone for your sweet comments, messages, and emails with well wishes. Every single one of them lifted my spirit! I can’t wait to feel 100% again. My family has been a huge help this week, whether it was entertaining Lila or keeping me company. I have the best parents and siblings and it’s times like these that make me love them 100x’s more.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

My Mother’s Day Wish List from Kay Jewelers

By on May 7, 2017

Hi everyone!

Mother’s Day will be here in a few short days. I love Mother’s Day because I have so many wonderful childhood memories of me and my siblings coming together to make the day special for our mom. We would start the day by going to church together in the morning, then taking her out to lunch, and then giving her the special gifts we had picked out for her. I loved making my mom feel special and also loved the quality family time we had together.

Since becoming a mother, I have appreciated my own mother in ways I never did before. All the great times, and all the not so great times. I know my mom was just doing her best and I appreciate her more than ever. So this Mother’s Day I wanted to spoil her with a piece of jewelry that she totally deserves from  Kay Jewelers. My mother is strong, brave, and loves fiercely. I wanted the piece of jewelry I picked out for her to match those qualities of hers.

I remember when I was a little girl I would go through my mom’s jewelry box and make her tell me the story of how she got each piece. Most of her jewelry was from my dad when he returned home from traveling. I loved being in her room and looking at all of her beautiful jewelry, and looking back this is such a sweet memory of mine. Simple moments of her telling me the story that went along with every necklace, bracelet, or earring she owned. Jewelry is so timeless, and I hope that one day I get to share one of these sweet moments with my daughter.

I think no matter what mom is to you, Kay Jewelers has an option to make this a Mother’s Day she will never forget with a huge selection and something for every budget. Here are just a few options from Kay that would make any moms day:

1) Diamond Earrings  /  2) Diamond Earrings  /  3) Diamond Bracelet  /  4) Diamond Bracelet  /  5) Diamond Necklace  /  6) Diamond Necklace

Happy Shopping!

Mother’s Day with Bouqs

By on April 25, 2017

Above And Beyond Bouquet

Hi Everyone!

Today and just in time for Mother’s Day I am sharing with you my favorite flower shop! The Bouqs Co. is a Venice CA-based flower company that ships beautiful ‘Bouqs’ from their farms directly to customers. Living in Los Angeles I love shopping at small, local shops around me. All their farms practice sustainable, eco-friendly farming, and they cut only what they sell – so they don’t waste 1 out of every 3 stems like others. Who can’t get on board with that?! So awesome.

Every year for Mother’s Day my mom gets a bouquet for me and this year I’ll be getting her one for BOUQS. I also like to get one for my sisters, closest mommy friends, and even my neighbor. Because who doesn’t like getting flowers? I love giving them almost as much as I love getting them so today I am sharing with a very special 20% off code so that you can check a special woman in your life off your list. You can use code: XOCELESTEWRIGHT for 20% off your order. You’re welcome 😉

One of my favorite parts of motherhood is watching Lila blossom. Lately she has become so outgoing and so sweet to other children and it really makes me proud to be her momma. I love looking over and seeing that she is sharing with other children or that she is helping a smaller kiddo do an activity. She also loves babies when they are in their carseats and will be so sweet to them. I really love watching her personality develop and seeing her sweet spirit grow. I am so happy to be her momma!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you lovely mommas out there. Xoxo

My Day In LA

Easter at The Langham Pasadena

By on April 17, 2017

Egg Hunt

Last year Lila had her first real experience with attending egg hunts and immediately we knew that she had some special feelings for Easter. Since that day we’ve kept a basket of easter eggs in her room and she has played with them consistently all year long, so much so that she has opening them down to such a science that we can’t get them closed again fast enough for her. The most special egg hunt for her was undoubtedly the one that took place at the Langham, and it seemed like every time she played with her eggs throughout the year we talked about going there again, so we knew as it came around the corner we had to make it a tradition for our family.

This year Lila appreciated the egg hunt even more, and displayed her skills like a pro when she got out on the lawn. The only thing that held her back was the size of her basket which was quickly overflowing. She really made the most of it and enjoyed every minute. I have no doubt that the egg hunt at the Langham is the best not only in Pasadena, but anywhere that I have ever been. Everything about it is perfect from the location to the eggs and their prizes, and even the adorable outfits on all of the little ones, this egg hunt is truly on another level.

Petting Zoo + Train Ride

In the immediate vicinity of the egg hunt there were so many fun things going on that were all geared for the little ones. The petting zoo they coordinate is seriously ADORABLE! They not only have bunnies and chickens, but sheep, baby goats, ducks, piglets, and a baby cow! Lila couldn’t get enough of the baby bunnies and spent way too long just petting them and talking to them like she does with her stuffed animals at home. Right next to the petting zoo they had the best Easter Bunny who was being so cute with all of the kids that were there, so when the line wasn’t too long we ran over so that Lila could get a photo with him. Usually she is a little bit skeptical of costumed characters at first and doesn’t like to get too close, but she ran right up to him and gave him a huge hug for the better part of a minute and wouldn’t let him go. Did I mention yet that this kid loves Easter and can’t get enough of the Langham?

To top off all of the activities on the lawn they have badminton, croquet, and a full on train ride! Last year we had a blast riding the train as a family and Lila remembered it well because she was asking for the train ride before it was even in sight. Long story made very short we rode that train somewhere between 8 and 10 times throughout the morning and you know what, it never got old! Lila was so excited and loved riding in a different color car each time, she couldn’t get enough of the conductor and appreciated it every time he made a “toot toot”.

Brunch

If there was one part of our stay that I have to admit I was most excited for, it was the brunch. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a waffle bar. As excited as I was and as high as my expectations were, the brunch was even better. Every single thing I tasted was delectable from the sushi and seafood bar, to the omelette station and the expansive table of breakfast foods. Sometimes I struggle with buffet style dining because I feel like they do an okay job at a lot of dishes, but don’t really have a focus. That was absolutely not the case here, it was as if they had one chef devoted to each particular dish and nothing felt like it was just a filler.

Beyond all of the amazing options in the main dining room they had the most adorable selection of pastries and an entire section of foods for kids. The kids corner was not only perfect for Lila’s taste buds, but they even had it set up low to the ground so that she was able to feel involved with the selection. Their whole set up was genius because Lila ate more in one sitting than I have ever seen her eat, and she’s an amazing little eater!

Of course the literal icing on the cake was the gigantic display of incredible desserts. I thought I was too full from the several plates I had already eaten to even think about sweets, but after one look I found myself getting one of everything to try, and making a couple of quick trips back to the chocolate fountain for another skewer of strawberries. I know I shouldn’t have, but hey, Easter only comes once a year and, well, I deserve it!

All in all we could not have imagined a better way to spend easter as a family than what we actually experienced at the Langham. The hotel is like a palace from my dreams, Lila literally referred to it as her “beautiful castle: throughout our entire stay and said “were homeeee” every time we walked into our room. The staff were amazing, the food was fantastic, the scenery was breathtaking, the mattress was heavenly, the people were friendly, and Easter was magical because of it. The Langham can count on seeing us again next year, and the next, and every one after that.

*A very special thank you to the Langham Pasadena for hosting us this weekend.
